Start with Reverence
Scripture: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name.’” Matthew 6:9 NKJV
Matthew 6:9 NKJV
Devotion:
These are the very first words Jesus told us to pray. Before asking for daily bread. Before healing. Before deliverance. Jesus says, start with reverence. To hallow God’s name means to treat it as sacred, revered, honored, and lifted high. But we do not hallow His name with words alone. We hallow His name with how we live. Every thought. Every tone. Every decision. As believers, everything we do either honors Him or gives others a reason to blaspheme against Him.
‘I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered throughout different countries. I judged them as their actions and conduct deserved. When my people were scattered to other lands, they dishonored my holy name in front of those nations. The people said of them, ‘Look! These are the people of Yahweh who have been forced out of his land.’ But I have been greatly concerned about my holy name, which the people of Israel have dishonored among the nations where they have gone.’ – Ezekiel 36:19–21
In Ezekiel 36:19–21, God is speaking to His own people, the ones He rescued, the ones He set apart. First, they abandoned the covenant; then, they refused to repent. And when judgment came, the nations mocked God.
“These are the Lord’s people,” they said. “And look what happened to them.”
They were not mocking the people. They were mocking the God those people claimed to serve. Now stop here and think about all that is happening within the body of Christ, because it still happens today. When we live with compromise. When we live with pride. When we say one thing and live another. The world looks at us and says, “This is what God produces? This is what it means to be saved?”
Just as it says in Romans 2:24, “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
And just like in Ezekiel 36, God’s name is blasphemed because of the way His people lived. Still, God restored them. But not because they changed. He said in Ezekiel 36:22, “It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of My holy name.” He is merciful. He is faithful. He will keep His covenant. But how long? How long will God have to bless us for the sake of His name and not because He promised us fruitfulness? How long will it be because of the sake of His name and not because He is pleased with our conduct and actions?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to truly revere Your name, not just with my lips but with my life. In Jesus name, amen.
Takeaway:
Holiness begins with honoring His name.
To-Do:
Spend 5 minutes in silence with God. Journal how you can live in a way that hallows His name this week.
God’s Name Among the Nations
Scripture: “And when they came to the nations, wherever they went, they profaned My holy name when they said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they have gone out of His land.’ But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went.”
Ezekiel 36:20–21 NKJV
Devotion:
When Israel abandoned the covenant, the nations mocked God, saying, “These are the Lord’s people, and look what happened.” Their compromise dishonored His name. Even now, when we live in pride or contradiction, the world questions God through us. Still, God said He would restore them, not for their sake, but for the sake of His holy name.
Prayer:
Father, forgive me for any way my conduct has caused others to dishonor You. In Jesus name, amen.
Takeaway:
How we live shapes how the world sees His name.
To-Do:
Read Ezekiel 36:19–22 again slowly. Journal: What areas of my life may cause others to dishonor God’s name? Then sit in silence for 5 minutes.
Conduct Matters
Scripture: “So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground. Abel, on his part, also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering; but for Cain and for his offering, He had no regard. So Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell. Then the Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.’”
Genesis 4:3–7 NKJV
Devotion:
God does not judge based on actions alone; He also judges based on conduct. Cain brought an offering. That was the right action. But Yahweh looked past what Cain placed on the altar and saw what was crouching at the door of his heart. The offering was rejected not because Cain failed to bring something, but because he refused to bring what was right. His gift lacked faith. It lacked surrender. It lacked reverence.
The Pharisees fasted, gave, and prayed. But Jesus said in Matthew 23:25–28 that they were like whitewashed tombs, beautiful on the outside, but full of deadness within. Their conduct was ruled by pride.
The Israelites followed the cloud by day and the fire by night. They moved when God moved. But their mouths were full of complaints and rebellion.
Deuteronomy 28 tells us clearly, when we obey, we’re blessed. When we turn away, curses follow. The covenant is not one-sided. It requires conduct, not just compliance. Romans 2:13 says: “It is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.”
People of God, God is not fooled by performance. He sees the tone. He sees the motive. He sees the way we serve, the way we speak, the way we give. He sees the rolling of the eyes. The pride behind the post. The bitterness hidden in silence. And all of it matters.
Prayer:
Lord, cleanse my motives. Teach me to offer not just actions but a pure heart. In Jesus name, amen.
Takeaway:
To God, it is never just about the offering; it is about the what and the how.
To-Do:
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your motives. Journal what He shows you. Sit with Him in 5 minutes of silence.
Empty Religion vs. Real Fruit
Scripture: “Now the next day, when they had come out from Bethany, He was hungry. And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, ‘Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.’ And His disciples heard it.”
Mark 11:12–14 NKJV
Devotion:
Jesus once saw a fig tree with leaves. From a distance, it looked full of life. But when He drew close, He found no fruit. Nothing to offer. Nothing real. He cursed the tree. That was not a harsh reaction. That was a warning. God is not pleased with empty appearances.
He does not want leaves. He wants fruit. Many of us look alive. We look spiritual. We even speak in tongues. But if people come close, will they find love? Will they see joy? Patience? Purity? Repentance? Honor? Or will they find religion with no relationship? Performance with no power? Knowledge with no humility? God takes fruitlessness seriously. Not because He is cruel, but because His name is on us.
Prayer:
Jesus, let my life bear the fruit of love, humility, and repentance. In Jesus name, amen.
Takeaway:
God desires fruit, not just leaves.
To-Do:
Read John 15:1–8. Write down the fruits you want the Spirit to grow in you. Spend 5 minutes in silence with the Vine.
Reflection and Repentance
Scripture: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalm 139:23–24 NKJV
Devotion:
Sit quietly. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth.
Have I lived in a way that honors God's name?
Has my conduct reflected His holiness?
Have I made Him look smaller through my attitude, my laziness, or my pride?
Be honest. Be still. Let the Holy Spirit do His work.
Prayer:
Father, in Jesus name, I have carried Your name without fear. I have spoken in Your name while hiding sin in my heart. I have given You my actions, but not my conduct. I have appeared fruitful, but I have not always been surrendered. Forgive me. Cleanse me. Let me hallow Your name in how I live, how I love, and how I walk before others in Jesus name, amen.
Takeaway:
Repentance opens the way for renewal.
To-Do:
Sit still before God for 5 minutes. Journal one area where you need His cleansing today.
My Declaration
Scripture: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Colossians 3:17 NKJV
Devotion: (Declaration):
Today I repent,
From this day forward, I will not carry God’s name lightly.
My conduct will reflect His character.
My life will produce fruit.
My posture will honor His holiness.
Not for my sake, but for His name.
Prayer:
Lord, seal this declaration in my heart. Keep me surrendered so I may truly live for Your glory. In Jesus name, amen.
Takeaway:
A declaration of repentance is a step into transformation.
To-Do:
Read your declaration aloud today. Journal how you want to live it out. Sit in silence for 5 minutes and let God affirm it.
