Abba Father

Mark 14:36

Hello, Special Reader — Before we begin, let us pray:

In Jesus name, Heavenly Father, we thank You.
Thank You for bringing Your child here to meet with You. We know this moment isn’t by chance or a coincidence. We believe it’s a divine appointment. We pray, O God, that whatever reason You’ve drawn them here for, may it be fulfilled in Jesus name. Please Lord, open their heart to receive, their ears to hear, and their eyes to see You clearly. Remove every distraction, every doubt, and every weight that would try to steal this moment. Let Your Spirit breathe life through every word. Let Your love be felt deeply. And may this reader walk away not just inspired but transformed.
In Jesus name. Amen.

ABBA –  reminds us God is also our Loving Dad, close, gentle, and safe.

FATHER reminds us God is King, Creator, and Ruler (Psalm 103:13,19; Isaiah 33:22).

From the very first pages of Scripture, God’s love for us shines through every generation. He has always been a Father, and never once has this role wavered or changed. In the story of creation (Genesis 1), we see God’s love woven into every detail: He ensured that everything we would need was prepared before He created man.

One remarkable thing to notice in the creation account is how, at the very core of man’s creation, we see a profound display of God’s fatherly love. With His words, He spoke the world into existence, but when it came to man, He formed us with His own hands and shaped us according to His likeness. From the beginning, He was intimately involved with us.

Jeremiah 1:5

‘“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart…” ‘

Jeremiah 1:5(NIV)

In this verse, knew translates to the Hebrew word Yada.” This knowing is not a superficial or surface-level knowledge. Instead, it speaks of intimacy, a deeply personal relationship. He knows us fully, in ways we ourselves cannot fathom or ever truly understand. He sees you exactly as you are, yet loves you with a fierce, unwavering love. His love and intimacy toward you have never wavered. He has always been there, an ever-present Father, longing for you and me to come home and be restored to oneness with Him again

“I myself said, “ ‘How gladly would I treat you like my children and give you a pleasant land, the most beautiful inheritance of any nation.’ I thought you would call me ‘Father’ and not turn away from following me.

Jeremiah 3:19

FATHER

The revelation of God as Father in Scripture is progressive: though He was not always expressly called “Father,” His relationship and actions toward humanity confirm that He is indeed a Father. He was first revealed as a Father to Israel as a nation, but not yet in a deeply personal way. I believe this was partly because the Israelites chose to keep their distance from God when He revealed Himself to them at Mount Sinai (the mountain where God gave Moses the Ten Commandments), asking Moses to approach Him on their behalf (Hebrews 12:18–21).

In the Old Testament, God’s Fatherly nature was mostly understood through His sovereignty, authority, and role as Creator and Redeemer of the nation. The personal, individual Father-child relationship was not yet fully revealed or experienced in the way it is through Christ in the New Testament.

It seemed as though there was an unseen bridge separating man and God — a gap that God saw and was eager to close by sending His only begotten Son (John 3:16). God sent Jesus to secure our eternity with the Father and to remedy the consequences of Adam’s (the first man) disobedience.

‘For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

ABBA

Through Jesus’ sacrifice, the revelation of ‘God with us’ (Emmanuel) comes to fruition. In the Jewish temple, a heavy curtain called “the veil” symbolized separation between a holy God and people. When Jesus died, this veil was torn, restoring direct access to Him (Matthew 27:51; Hebrews 10:19–20). This right here is what God has always desired to be. On the sixth day of creation (Genesis 1–2), the Bible says God personally breathed life into the first human, this is what He had in mind, a chance to be together, a chance to be Dad (ABBA) and not just Lord (Father) to us.

From the beginning, God was always extending His love and invitation, but humanity often withdrew/recoiled from His love (Exodus 20:18–19; John 1:11). Even now, many people fail to see the need for true intimacy with God. We often see Him only as Master and LORD, someone to present our requests and complaints to, hoping He will fix them, instead of embracing Him as our loving Father who desires relationship (John 15:15; Romans 8:15-17).

My Father, not just ‘Our Father’

It is only right that the revelation of God as Abba came from the Son Himself. The very first mention of ‘Abba, Father’ in the Bible was by Jesus in Mark 14:36.

“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

Mark 14:36

Jesus called Abba during a period of pain, He was getting ready to face the cross, and He needed comfort and strength from His Dad, His safe space. How I read this verse is ‘Daddy, I can’t do this by my own, please help me’. A very short prayer, yet so profound. Jesus’ intentionality in calling God in such an affectionate way while knowing what was coming is so commendable. Not only the prayer, but the names He used to describe God. At that moment, He knew that a deeper revelation of God in a personal way, is what He needed desperately.

God is not just Father to the nation, but Father to us. By His mercies, we’ve been fully adopted as heirs in the kingdom of God.
